I just realized that in a year, I’ll both be an adult and have graduated. I’m not ready for this. I just don’t really know who I am anymore. I don’t know what I want to do for a living, moving back to Ontario isn’t really probable for a good while, and I’m questioning existence. All I want to do is fuck around with cars, but it’s hard to make a career out of that. Angsty music for your time.

First off, great choice of angsty music. I’m a big fan of Brand New. Their sound has changed a lot over the course of 4 albums, but I like that. I feel like I grew up and matured as their sound did too (I’m 30 now).

It’s ok to not know what you want to do with your life. I’m still figuring it out for myself. My advice is just to try and find something to do that you don’t hate, and that pays you enough to survive. If that means you need a college degree then get one, but don’t go to college unless you know why you’re spending that money. You like fucking around with cars. Could you become a mechanic? Even if you don’t, if you are good with cars and have the right tools you could work on other people’s cars on the side to make a few bucks. If you’re talking more about customizing/modding cars, maybe look into shops that do that.

If you have the means, go on an epic road trip before joining the real world. You’re only going to gain more responsibilities as you get older, so it’s never easier to hit the road for a month then it is right now.

Btw, Brand New released a new song a few weeks ago.

I have an offer for a car audio job next year. The pay’s okay, but I enjoy the work and it’s better than retail as a “fresh out of HS” job. I’d love to get a job modding cars or whatnot, but I just don’t know how to get started. I would love to go on a road trip, and have been planning one for a while. I need to buy another car first, though.

Hey man, I’m almost twice your age and still don’t know exactly what I want to do for the rest of my life, still enjoy playing with cars, and still have a mini-existential crisis every now and then.

Well it sounds like you have enough of a plan to not have to worry too much. Life will sort itself out in time. I’m sure others on Oppo would know better than me how to get into the modding industry. Starting your own company probably isn’t the way to go, although you could potentially do that down the road after getting experience. Are there any shops or companies that do the kinds of stuff you want to do? If so, contact them. Maybe look into an internship or apprenticeship if they aren’t hiring entry level positions at the moment.

Have you considered trade school? I would recommend something that could apply to the automotive field but not actually a mechanic. Being a mechanic has a tendency to kill car enthusiasm. Welding or machining, for example.

First, I was exactly your age when I bough Your Favorite Weapon on CD when it first came out. Now I feel really old.

Second everyone I know who loved cars in high school and ended up making a career out of it hated it. If you love fucking around with cars, the best thing you can do is find something you don’t totally hate that has some actual career path. All jobs are going to have some component of suck, but if you find something that you are good enough at and can tolerate you’ll get to the point where you’ll have the extra money to fuck around with cars. Where I work you can start as a technician that just drills holes in things and if you show up on time, don’t slack off, and pay attention to what you’re doing you can move up to a management over time and make $100k. Finding something not dead end more important than the actual job.

Third and finally, nobody really knows who they are until their mid-20's. I watched the majority of my friends change completely from 18-25 - mostly for the better.
